5 soldiers wounded by active shooter at Fort Stewart in Georgia; gunman in custody, officials say
The "active shooter incident" prompted a lockdown at the U.S. Army base southwest of Savannah.
Five soldiers were shot and wounded in an "active shooter incident" that has prompted a lockdown at a U.S. Army base in Georgia, officials there say.
In an update posted to its Facebook page, Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said the shooting incident occurred in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area.
All of the victims "were treated on-site and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment," the post said.
"The shooter was taken into custody," the base said, adding that "there is no active threat to the community."
The incident remains under investigation.
In an earlier alert, Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said that law enforcement was on the scene, the post said, adding that 'casualties have been reported.' Gates to the base were closed and some schools in the area were briefly placed on lockdown.
In a separate post on X, the 3rd Infantry Division urged soldiers to 'stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.'
The FBI in Atlanta said on X that its office in Savannah was aware of the incident and is "coordinating with the Army's Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed."
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on X that he was "in close contact with law enforcement on the ground," adding that his family was "saddened by today's tragedy."
"We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same," Kemp said.
